ARS Liquid Semen Extenders are designed to be general purpose stallion semen extenders used with fresh semen for immediate insemination or for semen that will be cooled and stored or transported to another location prior to insemination of the mare. All three ARS Semen Extender formulas were developed and evaluated by the Colorado State University Equine Reproduction Laboratory (ERL).
All ARS extenders rely on a two-part packaging system to ensure freshness of the antibiotic. Most antibiotics lose effectiveness over time when stored in a liquid form. ARS ensures the effectiveness of our antibiotics by storing the ingredients in a stable dry form until mixing just before the extender is added to the stallion semen.
ARS BLUE™ is a new advanced extender specially formulated to maximize fertility in semen that has been cooled and or transported. The original E-Z Mixin® family of extenders have been the industry standard for many years. These Kenney-based formulas have been adjusted to allow the use of several different antibiotics to prevent bacterial growth and to optimize the length of time the semen can be cooled and stored prior to use. Finally, the E-Z Mixin® 10 family of extenders are a non-Kenney based formula that has been shown to work well in stallions whose semen does not cool well with a traditional Kenney extender.

Casein-based extender that can be used for
fresh insemination or cooled storage.  This
extender can be used as a routine multi-
purpose extender (i.e. fresh or cooled
semen) and can also be used for stallions
that do not cool well in a traditional Kenney-
based extender.

E-Z Mixin - “CST”
Excellent Kenney-based extender
formulation for general use.  The basic
formula contains the antibiotic amikacin. 
Can be used for extending stallion semen
for fresh insemination or for cooled
storage and transport.


E-Z Mixin 10-“CST”
A non-Kenney based formulation for fresh
insemination or cooled storage.  This
extender may be beneficial for stallion
semen that does not cool well in a
traditional Kenney-based extender.  The
basic E-Z Mixin 10 extender contains the
antibiotic amikacin.

Amikacin plus Potassium
Penicillin G
ARS BLUE with Amikacin and K Pen G
Casein-based extender that can be used for
fresh insemination or cooled storage.  The
addition of potassium penicillin G provides a
broader spectrum of bacterial growth control
than amikacin alone.

E-Z Mixin - “CST+”
Antibiotic option for stallions that cool well
in a Kenney-based formulation. The
addition of potassium penicillin G
provides a broader spectrum of bacterial
growth control than amikacin alone.

E-Z Mixin 10-“CST+”
A non-Kenney based formulation for fresh
insemination or cooled storage.  The
addition of potassium penicillin G provides
a broader spectrum of bacterial growth
control than amikacin alone.

Ticarcillin
ARS BLUE Basic Formula with Ticarcillin
Casein-based extender that can be used for
fresh insemination or cooled storage.
Ticarcillin provides an alternative antibiotic to
amikacin (± penicillin) and will provide
broad-spectrum control of bacterial growth.



E-Z Mixin - “BFT”
Antibiotic option for stallions that cool well
in a Kenney-based formulation, but
require a different antibiotic than amikacin
to maintain optimal sperm motility with
cooled storage.  Ticarcillin will provide
broad-spectrum control of bacterial
growth.

E-Z Mixin 10-“BFT”
A non-Kenney based formulation for fresh
insemination or cooled storage.  ticarcillin
provides an alternative antibiotic to amikacin
(± penicillin) and will provide broad-
spectrum control of bacterial growth.



Potassium Penicillin G

Casein-based extender that can be used for
fresh insemination or cooled storage.
potassium penicillin G will primarily provide
control of growth of Gram-positive
organisms.



E-Z Mixin - “BF+”
E-Z Mixin Antibiotic option for stallions that
cool well in a Kenney-based formulation,
but require a different antibiotic than
amikacin to maintain optimal sperm

Antibiotic selection is one of the most important decisions when choosing any extender. Colorado State University (ERL) and Animal Reproduction Systems both strongly recommend the use of an extender containing an appropriate antibiotic for any stallion semen used for insemination. Amikacin is a good general purpose antibiotic that is tolerated by most stallion spermatozoa. Consequently, this is the antibiotic of choice for most stallions. Ticarcillin is a good alternative for stallion semen that does not cool well in the presence of amikacin. In some situations, the addition of potassium penicillin G to an extender containing amikacin can provide additional broad spectrum protection to the standard amikacin based extender.

Each ARS formula has a “BF” or basic formula version that can be used as a centrifugation medium or as a base extender when custom antibiotics are required.
